Comprehensive Eye Exams
When to Schedule an Eye Exam
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that children have their eyes examined as young as six months of age followed by an exam at three years and prior to the start of school. Keep in mind, children who require eyeglasses should receive an annual eye exam. For children free of prescribed lenses, it is recommended that they receive eye exams every two years. We will provide the proper recommendations based on the results of your child’s exam.
Since eyesight changes over time, for adults ages 18 to 60, the AOA recommends comprehensive eye exams every two years. Adults 61 years or older should receive annual eye exams. Additionally, if you have a family history of disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or eye-specific diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration, more frequent exams may be needed. As always, at Hayder Eye Care we will do our best to recommend the frequency of your personal exam.
What we look for in eye exams
The purpose of a comprehensive eye exam is to detect health-related illnesses, some of which cannot be detected without an eye exam. Most commonly, eye exams will be able to determine if you require the care of a specialist. One key method to detect if you are prone to an illness is by dilating your eyes – a process that enlarges your pupils, allowing more light in and revealing any possible signs of retinal detachment, macular degeneration, or glaucoma. Don’t worry – when detected in the early stages, the majority of eye-related diseases are treatable.
Additionally, if you are wanting to determine if you are a good candidate for corrective vision procedures such as Lasik surgery, our El Paso eye doctor will be able to provide the correct professional advice. Unfortunately not everyone is a good candidate for vision correction eye surgery, therefore an eye exam will test for any signs of complications. If you are not a candidate for Lasik, we may recommend an alternative vision correction procedure.
Good eyesight is maintained by annual eye exams. Patients who wear corrective lenses should renew their eyeglass prescription annually. Many factors influence the health of your eyes over time, such as a changing of a job, lifestyle, and/or diet. A routine eye exam will provide you with an informative update and suggest ways to keep your eyes healthy and effective.
